Volunteering on Skid Row in Los Angeles with Sistxrs in Christ truly changed my heart. What I expected to be just an act of service became a powerful reminder of compassion, humility, and God’s love. Showing up, praying, and simply listening to the women there reminded me that everyone deserves dignity and hope. I went to be a blessing, but I left feeling blessed and transformed.

I had the opportunity to serve those in need on Skid Row in LA with Sisters in Christ. Initially, I was anxious and afraid of what we would find when we arrived but as soon as we started praying and serving , God renewed my mind and replaced my fear with joy. The people were so grateful for our presence and it truly showed me how compassion can have uplift those around you. I am honored and blessed to serve and am excited for another opportunity to pour back into others.

Being able to see the immediate impact of witnessing to the people on Skid Row is like none other. You are able to give them a moment of joy amidst the squalor and downtrodden lifeless world they’re found themselves in. Whether it’s a burger, a piece of fruit or a kind word, God’s love shows up and shows out! And this love comes back and renews one’s own heart because it is only by His grace that we’re not in the same position. I count it a privilege to be used by the Lord in this service!

I always go back to the verse in the Bible, Matthew 5:16, which reminds us to let our light shine before others so that they may see Christ through us. That verse becomes real to me when you understand it’s not about grand gestures or recognition, it’s about showing up with a heart ready to serve, to give, and to reflect God’s love in real ways. It showed me that sometimes we are placed in someone’s path for a reason, and sometimes we are the answer to someone’s prayer without even realizing it. Every time I volunteer it strengthens my heart for serving, and allowing God to work through me, shining His light wherever He calls us. Serving doesn’t just impact others, it transforms your own heart too. It strengthened my faith, deepened my compassion, and reminded me that we all have the ability to shine light into someone else’s darkness. When we choose to serve others, and to love, we reflect something greater than ourselves.
